How climate change is changing Chicago’s winter lakefront

Lake Michigan has long shaped Chicago’s identity, offering beauty, recreation, and economic vitality. Yet, climate change is disrupting the delicate balance of this iconic shoreline, with increasingly volatile weather patterns and rising water levels driving unprecedented changes.

The Rise of Extreme Waves

One of the most visible and dangerous impacts is the increase in wave intensity and complexity. Higher water levels, fueled by prolonged rainfall and rapid snowmelt, combine with stronger winds to create taller, more powerful waves. These waves, often amplified by chaotic patterns, hit the shoreline with destructive force, accelerating erosion, damaging infrastructure, and threatening public safety.
